HP8002 Working in the 21st Century

NTU Liberal Arts (LA) Electives

Module:
HP8002 Working in the 21st Century

Description:
Work in the 21st Century, is characterised by competition on a global scale, where jobs are becoming increasingly knowledge-intensive and technology-driven, and where constant change is the rule rather than the exception. This course aims to provide students with an understanding of some areas of study within the field of behavioural science that are relevant and applicable to the work situation. Working in the 21st Century explores the role of socio-psychological factors among individual and work group behaviour as a basis for understanding our place in the work setting. The lecture topics present four areas of interest - personality and work, occupational health, learning-performance, and career development. While each section is designed to be a stand-alone module, all the four areas of study are fully integrated within the general context of the work situation in organisations. Empirical findings from applied research are used to explain psychological principles and concepts and the course emphasizes a practical approach to applying psychology in the workplace.

  1. Study Techniques: Read through notes
    Results: SU
    Tutor: Dr Kamal Kant
    How did I study?
    - Seldom touch this subject, because I knew I won't do well for it as it wasn't one of my 'specialties'. I've learnt my weakness from screwing up my MB106 exam, that I'm not good at these essay-type exams. As such, I've SU this module right from the start. True enough, the exam turns out to be much tougher, even though clear tips were given (like what type of questions will come out). I've actually prepared with minimal time on these topics, which should be sufficient for me to get B+/A-. But it's lucky that I prepare amply, else the 'S' grade is 难保了.
    - Attend some of the lectures as a form of relaxation. Firstly, Dr Kamal's lectures were all very interesting, but they doesn't really help you to fully comprehend the concepts. Well, a lot of modules in NTU, you really have to depend on yourself to understand. I went for the last 2 lectures because it's important for exams.
    Mistakes made:
    - Skip many lectures (in fact, attend only 5/6 out of the 12).
    - Didn't place much importance on the pair assignment.
    Tips for scoring:
    - Attend every single lectures and listen with heart (even if you're SUing the subject. You will save the time to read through the notes in your free time).
    - Do regular revision (if you're not SUing, as many basic concepts are linked towards the end).
    - Must attend the first 5 lectures if you're SUing. This is because many important career theories are taught, and they always come out during exam.
    - Must attend the last lecture, as important tips are given, such as the topics that will come out.
    - Prepare your exam revision based on the tips religiously, and prepare them well (Other topics are not applicable, but may be useful to gain some bonus points).
