MS800M An Exploration Of Symmetry

NTU Science, Technology & Society (STS) Elective

Module:
MS800M An Exploration Of Symmetry

Description:
Symmetry is everywhere. In the grand scheme of things it is the blueprint by which the universe operates. We see symmetry in nature, art, architecture, science and engineering. This course explores the Beauty, Form and Function of Symmetry in common objects, then progresses to investigate tiling and tessellation, gems and crystals, and finally its indispensable role in technology. From looking at minerals and crystallography and also observing patterns and forms at the atomic scale, important in drug design, materials synthesis, and data storage devices, students will appreciate how today's advancement in technology, is in no small part a consequence of humankind?s increasingly sophisticated and precise manipulation of symmetry. To amplify these ideas, you will undertake field-exercises and be introduced to specialists, botanists, artists, geomancers, historians, scientists and engineers - that work with symmetry, and who will provide their personal insights into its "magic" and impact on their disciplines.

It is a simple course but still you need the determination to complete each online lectures in order to complete the assignments. It is truly a free 3AU UE, just that I find it boring to continue.

There are 3 open-book MCQ assessment tests, 3 tutorial assignments for online submission, and 1 written test. At the end of the course, you will pass if you manage to score at least 60% of mark. Each assignments are marked by random peer evaluation. Some evaluation will be so strict that you might just get a 0 marks in the end.

You are allow to drop the course anytime you want to. Results are required to be credit transferred back to NTU to include into degree audit.

Comment: This is an online course that can earn you 3 AU. It is only about 8 weeks long. The lessons are all online and they are quite interesting. There is this video about the prof visiting a crystal shop. It is the best video ever. The field exercise is very fun as you got to take selfie and other people will get to see it as they got to mark your work. There is no way you can fail this course so long you submit all the CA on time.

Look out for the email in your school email. It will be either call MOOC or coursera.

Verdict: This is the must take course. It is a 3 AU and pass/fail course. There is no way you can fail so long you submit all your work on time. Be sure to do the authentication at the end of each submission as failure to do so might cause you to lose the 3AU.

Take note that the 3 AU will only be credited together with the release of results. So don't spam email to the admin office.
