  1. Name of Module: CM8002 Forensic Science

Semester taken: AY 15/16, Sem 1

    #01 Module Format:
3 hours weekly lecture. 1 mid-term quiz (35%); 1 final exam (65%); no class participation.

    #02 Module Workload: Easy
Not much work needed to be done, except to prepare for the quizzes and final exams. Online segment during the holidays made workload during the semester easier as well.

#03 Lecture Content & Lecturer: Very good
Prof Roderick Bates was extremely entertaining, making a lot of jokes with a straight face. Content of the lecture was extremely engaging, although there were some gruesome images been shown during lecture (like Huang Na's crime scene). Overall, extremely interesting module.

#04 Ease of Scoring in Module: Difficult
Finals were extremely tricky because MCQs were very similar, and there was little room for error. Lots of people taking this module as well, making it extremely competitive.
#05 Should I take this module? Other comments/ advice?
Yes, because it's very interesting and enjoyable to learn in this module. You can take the online segment which grants you 2 AUs which will be pass/ fail. The last segment is 1 AU only, which means even if you don't do well, the implications on your cGPA is minimal.

  2. all lectures are pre-recorded and posted on this education platform called Coursera on a weekly basis, spread over 8 weeks. You would only need to go to school for Forensic Science after this period to hear guest speakers (actual forensic scientists and law enforcers) from various organisations such as HSA and SPF. If you’re not disciplined enough to watch the online lectures, you can always read the transcripts (which was what my friends did). The lecture notes are also quite comprehensive on its on.

There would be weekly assignments on Coursera (just 15 MCQ questions based on the topic covered that week) and 3 graded assignments (short-answer questions) over the course of 8 weeks. All these form your e-learning activity, which constitutes 5% of the total grade. There is also a midterm (15%) and a closed-book final exam (80%).

I’ve decided to exercise my S/U option on this because this course is extremely competitive so getting a good grade won’t be easy. By the way, this class is so huge that they have to conduct the lessons at the auditorium.

  3. This course is also offered as an UE. Topics include fingerprinting, firearms and ammunition, hair, and DNA methods. Half of the lectures were by CBC profs, and the other half are by guest speakers who are local forensic science experts. We had one speaker from the police force and he shared (gruesome) pictures with us, like Huang Na's body when it was recovered and people who were left with unrecognisable features after accidents. People who cannot take gore were advised to leave the hall. The CA (20%) consisted of 25 MCQs and it was easy and hilarious, but easy to make mistakes. One question was like, "Which of the following is not a blood type? a) A, b) B, c) C, d) O" People really score for the CA and the average was around 23/25 (I got 21/25). Finals (80%) consisted of MCQs and Short Answer Questions, including a case study where you're supposed to make a deduction using the evidence found. I'd say that its hard to score for this module unless you memorised all the content, because the profs like to test the really nitty gritty stuff.

  4. Course Name: Forensic Science
    Course Code: CM8002
Elective Type: Ger Pe - STS or UE
Assessment: Mid term 20% and Exam 80%

Comment: This course is very fun and easy to get A. There will be guest speaker to the lecture and they are real life police or doctor. You will learn about blood, drugs, time of death and etc. Whatever you learn from CSI turns out to be not 100% accurate. There are also very interesting case study in the course.

I heard this course have a change in format. It became 1 AU graded and 2 AU ungraded on MOOC.

Verdict: This is a must take course. It is very fun and easy. Probably the best elective in NTU. Since it became part of MOOC, i believer it should be pass fail. So what are you waiting for?

  5. The average for mid terms is around 14/25 last sem, not as easy as before.

  6. COURSE CODE:CM8012
    INTRO TO FORENSIC SCIENCE
As mentioned by other reviewers, this is a 2au mod with only online lectures for roughly the first half of the semester. It consists of a peer graded quiz which is the main assessment as well as other online mcq from time to time. Really low commitment. If u do intend to fit a low commitment elective into your already packed timetable, this would certainly be the one, especially when there are only e-lectures.

  7. Is the content the same for CM8002 and CM8012? The difference between them is the grading?
